:: About Us ::

Positano
is a spacious, modern house that has been recently refurbished throughout to an exceptionally high standard, offering accommodation on a bed and breakfast basis.  Located very centrally in Glasgow Road, Dumbarton (15 minutes from Glasgow Airport; and minutes away from Loch Lomond).  Although on a main road, our main entrance is at the back of the house (off the main road), with a big garden and back yard, with ample private parking facilities for your car.  You really wouldn't know that we're on a main road at all.
None of our rooms suffer from traffic noise - we have the best of both worlds: a convenient, easy to find location that is ideal as a touring base for this area of western Scotland; and beautiful, peaceful accommodation.  We offer a friendly and helpful family service that is suitable for short and long term stays.

We are approved by the Scottish Tourist Board, so you are guaranteed quality accommodation.

Note: there is an online translator at both the top and bottom of this page if you're having any difficulties.

:: Location ::

Dumbarton is a fantastic stop over town to spend some days in (with Loch Lomond minutes away), before going further north to the Highlands, Fort WilliamInverness and Loch Ness on your vacation (they're only a few hours drive away).

We're only a 15 minute drive from Glasgow Airport on the west coast; and Prestwick Airport is about 55 minutes away.   We're in a very central location in the town: a 15 minute walk from Dumbarton Town Centre which has many shops, restaurants and pubs; and there are also many other excellent pubs and restaurants in the immediate area catering for every taste.  We also have many beautiful local walks and cycling routes.

We are an ideal base for touring all around this area of Scotland.  Whether it's the city or tranquil countryside you're after - or a bit of both, we have the best of both worlds.  Loch Lomond, Balloch, Helensburgh and Clydebank are right on our doorstep; we're ideal for day trips to places such as LussStirlingTroon, Ayr(shire), Callander, Dunoon, the Trossachs, Inveraray, Aberfoyle and Oban.  Even Edinburgh is only a 70 minute drive away!  Glasgow City Centre with it's wonderful museums, shops, restaurants and night life is also only 25 minutes away.  And of course Dumbarton Castle is right on our doorstep.

If you're a golf enthusiast Loch Lomond Golf Club, where the Barclay's Scottish Open takes place every July, is a 15 minute drive away.  The new golf course, The Carrick, at Cameron House, also at Loch Lomond is 10 minute drive.  Don't forget to visit Dumbarton Golf Club while you're here too!

If Whisky is your thing, the very well know Auchentoshan Distillery is 10 minutes from us.  They welcome visitors and have daily guided tours.

For the gardeners (or even if you're not a gardener!), Loch Lomond Homes & Garden Centre (a few minutes from us) is HIGHLY recommended.  You can spend the whole day here with so many amazing things to see and do.  Includes a fantastic cafe - you can download the menu at the bottom of this page.

Scotland is world famous for it's fishing holidays and angling breaks.  The River Leven and Loch Lomond provide great salmon and trout fishing.

If you're interested in walking or climblingthe Munro's are the highest of Scotland's mountains, named after the man who first catalogued them, Sir Hugh Munro.  There are nearly 300 mountains above 3000 feet.  Ben Lomond is the closest to us.  We're also very close to the start of the 95 mile long West Highland Way - a walking route from Milngavie to Fort William.

The popular Unit 23 Skate Park (Unit 23 Skatepark), which is one of the largest and most popular parks of it's kind in the UK, is only a few minutes walk from us.  Dumbarton Football Club is also only a 10 minute walk away, right next to the Castle.

Dumbarton Public Library is a short 10 minute walk away.  Many of our guests go here to research their family history and to take advantage of their free Internet access.  St. Patrick's Roman Catholic church is right across the road from the library, and there are a number of other churches in the area with historic significance.  Dumbarton People's Theatre is also just around the corner.

We are very well situated for the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre (SECC) in Glasgow.  To give you an idea of how convenient we are to get there: Our closest train station is Dumbarton East (5 minute walk away from the B&B); there is a train station actually at the Exhibition Centre, and the journey is less than 30 minutes away from Dumbarton.  It often takes less time travelling from Dumbarton to the SECC than it does to get to the SECC from within the very busy city centre.

We can't possibly mention everything you can do and see on this page, so we've put together a LINKS page with many more suggestions on it for you.  Please do go over and take a look if you get the chance.

There is good transport in the immediate area: a bus stop right across the road and a train station (with it's frequent services to Glasgow City Centre) a 5 minute walk away.

We have ample private parking facilities at the back of the house if you have a car; and we have a garage if you need to lock up (e.g.) your bikes safely for the night.

Some distances, to give you a better idea: Glasgow Airport approx. 7 miles; M8 Junction 31, approx. 1.4 miles; Alexandria approx. 2.5 miles; Glasgow (city centre), approx. 13 miles.

:: Arts & Culture in West Dunbartonshire ::

You can download a fascinating booklet on our town at the West Dunbartonshire Council website, Dumbarton Heritage Trail. (Note, this link can sometimes be down, so we've uploaded the Pdf file here for you to view too).

West Dunbartonshire Heritage trails are designed to guide you around some of the most fascinating local areas, and to indicate significant social, historical and architectural features. Each downloadable leaflet on this site includes an annotated map, detailed narrative and a number of images relating to the trail. You can also take virtual tours of the trails without leaving the web site!

The Heritage Trails were produced by volunteers from West Dunbartonshire Heritage Ltd with support from West Dunbartonshire Council.

The above is taken from the WDC website.  If you have any interest in Dumbarton, I would highly recommend downloading the booklet (you will need Adobe Reader) or take the virtual tour.

:: Dumbarton Castle ::

While you're here, you absolutely must see the Castle, which is only a 5 minute walk away from our Bed & Breakfast.  Dumbarton Castle has the longest recorded history of any stronghold in Great Britain.  It overlooks the whole town of Dumbarton, sitting on a plug of volcanic basalt known as Dumbarton Rock, previously known as Alcluith (Clyde Rock).  There are also views of Ben Lomond and Glasgow in the distance.  The views at the top are breathtaking - it's worth every step to reach the top and see it!  Please view this link  for more information on Dumbarton and the Castle.

:: Directions ::

How to get to Positano Bed & Breakfast (79 Glasgow Road):

By Car
    Travelling Northwards: If you're driving from e.g., Glasgow Airport or Prestwick Airport, we're on the west road you take to get into Dumbarton - the A814 (the side that Dumbarton Castle is on to your left).  We're about a 1.2 mile direct drive from when you enter Dumbarton.  There is a bus stop right across the road from the B&B.  If you're unsure where you are, pull into this bus stop and look across the road where you will see the signs for the B&B.  Note that if you see two big supermarkets on either side of the road, you have driven too far and passed the Bed & Breakfast, and you will need to go back around the Roundabout which will take you back onto Glasgow Road.  We're just a minutes drive down the road from this Roundabout on the left.
    Travelling Southwards: If you're driving from e.g., Inverness or Loch Lomond, when you come into Dumbarton, take the 3rd Exit off the Barloan Roundabout into B830 (Bonhill Road) which goes into Townend Road.  You will then come into Church Street.  After approximately 160 yards, take the 2nd Exit off the Roundabout into the A814 (Glasgow Road).  After approximately 370 yards take the first Exit off the Glasgow Road Roundabout into the A814.  At this Roundabout you will see two large supermarkets on either side of the road.  The Bed & Breakfast is just a minute down the road on your left.

By Rail: Dumbarton East is our closest station.  You come out of the station and take a right.  It's a straight walk from there - we're about 5 minutes away on foot.  Dumbarton Central station is also very close by (10 minutes by foot), in the other direction from Dumbarton East: take a left when you come out of Central station and walk down Glasgow Road.

Please also view the area map. (link)  The B&B is located at the red circle on the map.

When you Reach the Bed & Breakfast: There are two signs with our Bed & Breakfast name on it just off the main road.  Between those two signs you will see an Insurance Office (called Youngs Insurance).  There is a drive way/path to the left of this Insurance Office and this is where you drive your car to get to the back of the house and can safely park.  If you don't have a car, please walk up the same driveway.  The B&B reception is the house at the back with the conservatory at the end.

:: Terms & Conditions ::

 It is very Important that you read these T&Cs carefully, as you are agreeing to these conditions when you place your booking.

      Our Check-in/Arrival Time Policies

  • Check in on the day of your arrival is from 14:00 to 18:30 (2pm to 6.30pm) unless otherwise agreed
  • Check in outside of these hours is at our discretion and must be agreed upon in advance (i.e. prior to the day of your arrival).  It is very important that you let us know an approximate time that you will be arriving when you make your reservation.  Your expected check-in time will be specified in your Booking Confirmation.  Check-in outside of these specified times MUST be confirmed by us in advance.  Please keep in mind that we are a small Guest House and do not operate a 24 hour reception desk.
  • It is very rare (always presume that it is not possible) that we are able to check guests in before 12:00 (noon) or after 21:00/9pm (on the day of your arrival), particularly during our busy months.  Please always be sure to check with us when you make your booking: we can be flexible and we are always happy to accommodate our guests as much as possible if we are able to, but it must be agreed when you make your booking
  • PLEAST NOTE: When you have checked in, you can of course come and go as you please afterwards, there are no restrictions or curfews.
  • Unless it has been agreed upon when you made your booking, we will not check guests in after 21:00 (9pm) on day of arrival under any circumstances.

      Deposits

  • When a deposit/payment is required, if it has not been received 5 working days from the date the booking was made, we cannot guarantee the room(s), and they may be re-allocated without prior notice.
  • If you need to cancel, we would appreciate as much notice as possible, in order to re-let the room.  If the room is re-let we will refund any advance deposit (or in some cases full payment) you have made, less a small administration fee.  Therefore, if you need to cancel your booking, we recommend that you let us know as soon as possible - it really does benefit us both.
  • It's always a good idea to consider Travel Insurance.
  • If you are making a change to your reservation, it is always best to CALL to let us know.  If you are e-mailing please be sure to get a confirmation from us that we have received your e-mail.  We will always confirm receipt of your e-mail, even if just to say that it's been "received".  If you do not get this confirmation, it is highly likely that we have not received your e-mail!
  • The full balance of your payment is required when you check in on the day of your arrival.

      General

  • You must be able to enter into a legally binding contract and be over the age of 18 to make a booking.
  • Due to security and fire safety regulations, only our guests who have checked in and have paid for their accommodation are permitted in the house at any time.   We may make exceptions to this, but it must be checked with the owner first.
  • The house is normally closed to guests after breakfast, between 10am and 1pm every day (we do need to do housekeeping!), but if you have any special requests regarding this, please ask and we will try to be as flexible as possible.
  • We expect you to take reasonable care of our property, and we reserve the right to charge you for any lost or damaged items, including any keys issued to you.
  • Any guest(s) found to be causing a general disturbance, including disturbing other guest(s), depending on how serious the disturbance is, will be given a warning. Failure to adhere to the warning will result in the guest(s) being asked to leave the premises. If it is a serious disturbance, no warning will be given and you will be asked to leave the premises immediately. No refund will be given.
  • In the very unlikely event that for some reason outside of our control we have to change or cancel your reservation, we reserve the right to do so.  If this does arise you can: 1. Accept the changed arrangements as notified (if we have another room available); 2. Make an alternative arrangement with us that we both agree on; or 3. Cancel your reservation and receive a full refund of any monies paid.
  • The house is completely non smoking.  As of March 2006, it is against the law in Scotland to smoke inside public buildings.  We take this very seriously: smoking can easily cause physical damage to the property and presents a clear fire danger.  It also sets off smoke and fire alarms on the premises as well as contaminating the room with the smell of stale smoke for incoming guests.  Guests are welcome to smoke outside in the garden/yard area if they wish.
  • Check out time on day of departure is no later than 10am, to allow us to prepare the rooms for incoming guests.
  • We have a no pet policy, to consider people with allergies.
  • We regret that we cannot keep luggage for guests before they check in or after they check out.
